American Legion Auxiliary Unit #43 will be holding a Yard & Bake Sale event on Saturday, March 25th. Stop by the American Legion Post in La Grande from 8AM – 1PM, to browse through the items for sale. If you would like to donate any good working condition items beforehand, drop them off at the Post Monday through Saturday from 3PM – 8PM. Any large items you’d like to donate should be dropped off on Friday, March 24th only. No clothing please. For more information, contact Kathi at 541-786-4044.

There will be another AARP “Smart Driver” Safety Class, on Saturday, March 25th, at Grande Ronde Hospital. The class will take place from 9AM – 4PM, and will be taught by certified volunteer instructor, Fred Moore. Completion of the class entitles drivers over 55 to a discount in their auto insurance in most cases. Cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. The American Legion Post 43 in La Grande is serving up hamburgers every Tuesday night from 5PM – 7PM. Stop in for the finest hamburgers in Union County, and enjoy live music too. The public is welcome to come down to 301 Fir Street in La Grande each week to participate.

Grande Ronde Hospital’s Cancer Support Group meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 6:30PM – 7:30PM, in the Mt. Emily Conference Room, on the third floor. This is an opportunity for cancer patients, survivors, and loved ones to learn and share. If you have any questions, please contact the group’s volunteer coordinator at 509-420-0300.

Veterans of Foreign Wars High Valley Post 4060 is holding Bingo each Wednesday, at the VFW Hall in Union. The doors will open at 5PM, with early bird games starting at 6PM, and regular games at 7PM. For more information, contact Cora, at 541-562-6153.

The Baker City Apostolic Lighthouse youth group is holding an ongoing can & bottle drive at 7th and Broadway in Baker City. There is a trailer set up with signs that you can drop can and bottle donations into. If you have 2 or more bags you’d like to donate, contact Kristin to arrange a local pickup, at 541-403-0909.

La Grande Weight Watchers are now meeting weekly at a new time. The group will have weekly weigh-in beginning at 4:45PM each Thursday, with the meeting following at 5:15PM. Drop-in hours will also be available from 8AM – 9:30AM every Saturday. All meetings take place in the basement at Riveria Activity Center, located along Y Avenue in La Grande. The American Legion Post 43 in La Grande holds Bingo Thursday evenings, with Early Bird games starting at 6PM, and a second session beginning at 7PM. Jackpots start at $100 and $250, and a 50/50 raffle will also be available. The public is welcome to come down to 301 Fir Street in La Grande each week to participate. Refreshment will also be served. Cash only please.

The Meals on Wheels program in Baker County is in need of volunteers to deliver meals to seniors at their homes. The time investment is only about two hours per week. If you are interested in helping out stop by the Community Connection of Baker County office at 2810 Cedar Street or call 541-523-6591.

Every Monday through Friday the Community Connection Senior Dining Center in Baker City serves up lunch at 12PM. There is a suggested donation of $4 for persons 60 and over, and a cost of $6.25 for persons under 60. Stop by Community Connection of Baker County, located at 2810 Cedar St. in Baker City to take a look at the menu and see what else is offered.

There is a monthly support group for those with spouses who have long term or terminal illness. This support group meets on the first Monday of each month at St. Luke’s Eastern Oregon Medical Associates conference room, at 11:30AM. If you have any questions, contact Gloria at 541-403-2659.

Wildflower Lodge Assisted Living in La Grande holds their Dementia Support Groups on the first and third Wednesday of each month. The Dementia Support Groups are free to attend, and the next one will take place at 12PM on Wednesday, April 5th, at Wildflower Lodge. In honor of National Lineman Appreciation Day, a newly released film starring John Travolta as an electrical lineman will be shown at Baker County Public Library, on Friday, April 7th, at 6PM. Linemen are the brave men and women who protect public safety by constructing and maintaining electric power transmission and distribution facilities. Utility line work is among the top 10 most dangerous jobs in America. With recent wildfires and extreme winter weather, help show your gratitude for our local linemen, by attending this event. Admission is free and complimentary refreshments will be provided. Please note that this film has been Rated R by the MPAA.

Elkhorn Preparedness, formerly Baker County Oath Keepers, host a monthly meeting at El Erradero in Baker City, on the third Tuesday of each month. The meeting will be held at 6PM, and all Baker County residents are welcome to attend.

Every third Thursday a cancer support group meets in Baker City at St. Luke’s Eastern Oregon Medical Associates. For more information about the group’s monthly meetings, contact Gloria at 541-403-2659.

If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, how about becoming a Union County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador? Chamber Ambassadors are a group of volunteers who assist the Chamber office.
