Wildflower Lodge Assisted Living in La Grande holds their Dementia Support Groups on the first and third Wednesday of each month. The Dementia Support Groups are free to attend, and the next one will take place at 12PM on Wednesday, December 5th, at Wildflower Lodge. The OSU Extension office in Union County will be hosting an informational class titled “So You’ve Got A Forest… Now What?”. This free class will answer the most common questions new forest owners (or those new to managing their forests) ask. An overview will be provided on how forestland is assessed and taxed, how zoning and land use planning rules impact forest management, where to get assistance for developing a forest management plan, and more. Veterans of Foreign Wars High Valley Post 4060 is holding Bingo each Wednesday, at the VFW Hall in Union. The doors will open at 5PM, with early bird games starting at 6PM, and regular games at 7PM. For more information, contact Cora, at 541-562-6153.

The Meals on Wheels program in Union County is in need of volunteers to deliver meals to seniors at their homes. The time investment is only about two hours per week. If you are interested in helping out stop by the Community Connection of Union County office at 1504 N Albany St in La Grande, or call 541-963-7532.

The Elgin Lions Club holds Bingo each Wednesday evening at the Elgin Community Center. Doors open just before 6PM, and play starts at 6:30PM. Concessions will also be available.

The American Legion Post 43 in La Grande holds Bingo Thursday evenings, with Early Bird games starting at 6PM, and a second session beginning at 7PM. Jackpots start at $100 and $250, and a 50/50 raffle will also be available. The public is welcome to come down to 301 Fir Street in La Grande each week to participate. Refreshment will also be served. Cash only please.

The Baker City Police Department will be holding the third annual Drug Prevention K9 Fundraiser event, on Saturday, December 8th. Social hour will begin at 4PM at the Baker City Event Center, with a K9 demonstration starting at 5PM, and dinner served up at 5:30PM. A live auction will be happening at 6:30PM, along with silent auction and raffle too. Tickets for the fundraiser event are just $25, and kids under 6 can get in for free. Tickets are available at Baker City Police Department, Barley Brown’s Tap House, and Thatcher’s Ace Hardware.

The Cook Memorial Library’s Literacy Center is open every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in La Grande. From 1:30PM – 5PM, devoted volunteers assist any individual that needs help in all areas of reading, writing, and speaking. There are opportunities to connect with reading partners, develop reading and language skills, and even help with homework for students. This is a perfect opportunity for all ages to receive free help in these literacy skills, or even for someone you care for. For the 10th consecutive year, La Grande Police department is teaming up with Walmart and Loveland’s Funeral Chapel to provide the “Shop With A Cop” event for more than a dozen local elementary school students. These students, selected by school counselors, will pair up with police officers to shop for presents for family and friends. Approximately 35 volunteers will also assist during the event, in preparing lunch and wrapping gifts for the children, also providing Christmas trees for the children’s homes that don’t have one. Walmart donates $2,000 each year to make this event possible, as well as over $1,000 contributed from community members and local businesses. Elkhorn Community Preparedness in Baker City hosts a monthly meeting at the Sunridge Inn, on the third Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be held at 6:30PM on December 18th. All Baker County residents are welcome to attend the meeting.

La Grande Rifle & Pistol Club is holding a .22 Rim Fire Silhouette event on the first Sunday of each month, now through April. These events are open to the public, with a $5 entry fee to participate. Eye and ear protection is required. The next event will start at 9AM on Sunday, January 6th, at the Club’s “River” Range, which is 3 miles west on Ukiah-Hilgard Hwy. 244 from I-84 exit 252. Every Monday through Friday the Community Connection Senior Dining Center in Baker City serves up lunch at 11:30AM. There is a suggested donation of $4.50 for persons 60 and over, and a cost of $6.25 for persons under 60. Stop by Community Connection of Baker County, located at 2810 Cedar St. in Baker City to take a look at the menu and see what else is offered.

If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, how about becoming a Union County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador? Chamber Ambassadors are a group of volunteers who assist the Chamber office.
